2005 ELITE 125 LB BLAKE COLLIER
JUSTIN, Texas - For about two weeks, I had been hearing about this very aggressive linebacker from East Texas who was really impressive on his highlight film. His name was Blake Collier.
Then as fate or the Angels would have it, his dad emailed me to tell me about his son. I immediately asked him to send me a highlight film and he did.
The really amazing thing about Blake Collier (6-2, 228, 4.36) is that he is so aggressive and so intense, I'm still trying to figure how could he not be on every single major recruiting list in the country? I'm still puzzled on that question.
On his highlight film, Collier plays middle linebacker and he is so quick that he can back up in a pass defense mode and then react and make the tackle at the line of scrimmage when the quarterback in flushed out of the pocket and on the run toward the line of scrimmage for positive yardage.
As a sophomore, Collier played defensive end and he recorded 64 tackles, had 4 sacks, had 9 tackles for a loss, and blocked two punts. Then as a junior, he recorded 88 tackles, had 2 sacks, 15 tackles for a loss, 2 interceptions, and another blocked punt.
Linebackers rarely are quick and fast enough to block a punt or an extra point, but Collier is a lot faster than most linebackers and he is so intense and he has a tremendous work ethic. "I try to make every tackle," said Collier, "and I work very hard to make them."
He is also very strong as he has recorded a 325-pound bench press and he has done 24 reps of 185-pounds on the bench press. He also has recorded 10 reps of 225-pounds on the bench press, squats 450-pounds, power cleans 275-pounds, and hang cleans 225-pounds.
A lot of schools have found out about Collier, including Texas, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and LSU. Texas Tech has given him an early offer, but many others will follow soon.
Collier ran a 4.46 at a NIKE Camp last summer, but then improved that time to 4.36 last weekend at another combine. He carries a fine 3.15 GPA and will take his ACT Test on April 9 and his SAT Test on May 7.
Collier will play for the West Team in the 2006 All-American Bowl Game Classic. I have him penciled in at strongside linebacker, but with his outstanding speed and aggressive play, he's almost illegal at the inside backer. I'll let the defensive coaches decide.
