Texas Quarterback is on the Rise

By: Greg Powers

Southlake, Texas is not only home of the defending State Champion football team the Carroll Dragons, it is also home to one of the fastest rising quarterback prospects in the nation: Greg McElroy (6’2, 215, 4.7).

McElroy has been extended offers by about 10 schools, and that is without even starting a single game up to this point in his high school career. He had a hard time seeing the field as he played behind starting quarterback, Texas player of the year, and upperclassman Chase Daniel (Missouri). Despite not getting the chance to start Greg has been fortunate enough to be under the tutelage of some of the best coaches in the country in Todd Dodge (Southlake Carroll) and Bob Johnson (Mission Viejo, Elite 11).

“I could not go wrong with the quarterback coaches that I have been working with. Here in Southlake I have a great quarterback coach, in Coach Dodge. Coach Johnson is one of the best football coaches in the country. He is such a great quarterback coach. It is really fun working with them, and seeing what type if quarterbacks, they produce. I could not go wrong as far as quarterback coaching is concerned.”

McElroy got enough reps in last year to put together a solid highlight reel for all the coaches to see the way he delivers the ball and the poise he brings to the pocket, but he contributes a lot of his early recruiting success to the Spring/Summer camp circuit. He also feels that the seven on seven games that he and his team played in this summer has prepared him for early success on the field.

“I went to quite a few camps. I went to Texas, Texas Tech, BYU, SMU, Alabama, and Tennessee. I ran my best times at SMU. I ran a 4.71 forty so I was happy with that. I am usually a high 4.7 guy. My fastest time was a 4.69, but that was on grass. I also played in Max Emfinger’s Seven on Seven National Championship in Fort Worth. I was not able to be there for the first day, but I played until we got put out by the team that won the Championship (Arlington Lamar). I feel like we played really well against some great competition. I think that the seven on sevens were a great tool for me. It gave me the chance to get many good reps in with the first team receivers. It was good getting used to them and getting a feel for how fast they are. I got some of the reps back that I missed out on the last couple of years. It helped me to get my reads in and prepare for the season,” said McElroy.

Kansas, UTEP, Texas Tech, North Carolina, Ole Miss, BYU, TCU, SMU, UNLV, and Houston are the schools that have already extended offers, but McElroy is not ready to even start to trim his list. Some of the top programs in the Nation are considering extending an offer to Greg, but he is not ready to limit his opportunities right now.

“Kansas was the first school to offer back in March, and I was ecstatic. That first offer takes a lot of weight off your shoulders. That school being a Big 12 school made it even better. I have not named a top five yet because there are still a lot of other schools that are currently showing a strong interest. Some of the schools that are following me closely are Tennessee, Alabama, Texas, Stanford, and Southern Cal.  They are not necessarily my favorite schools, but they are showing me the most interest. Iowa is another. They are showing a lot of interest, but have yet to step forward with an offer.”

McElroy is not only going to be a leader on the field, but he is a leader in the classroom as well, as he currently checks in with a 3.9 grade point average. The combination of field command, classroom prestige, and raw talent may have some of the nations top coaches knocking on the McElroy’s front door in the very near future.
